In 1993 Burt Payne 3 exhibited the contents of his CalArts graduate MFA thesis. The contents surrounded the paperwork and applications of four fictitious artists that Payne created. Payne created identities, bodies of work, and faked transcripts to complete their applications to CalArts’ highly esteemed undergraduate art program. In 1996 Payne created an exhibit of new work by these artists.

Burt Payne classic “Sorry I Fucked Up the World” hat, a limited edition based on the work Payne created for Donald Ross CalArts application. Donald Ross was one of Payne’s fictitional artists who was accepted to study at CalArts. The hat is a more general statement than Ross’ original t-shirt which read, “This White Male Hetero says ‘Sorry I fucked up the world.’”
